The U.S. government's decision to incinerate $9.7 million worth of contraceptives is projected to have severe consequences for women and girls in five African countries. The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) estimates this action will lead to 174,000 unintended pregnancies and 56,000 unsafe abortions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, and Mali. IPPF, a global healthcare provider, condemned the action, highlighting the critical need for access to contraception for sexual and reproductive health. Over three-quarters of the destroyed contraceptives were intended for these nations, exacerbating existing challenges in accessing essential healthcare services.
