Missouri health officials have confirmed a case of a rare brain-eating amoeba infection in a state resident. The individual is currently hospitalized, and preliminary investigations suggest the infection may have been contracted while water skiing in the Lake of the Ozarks. The amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, is typically found in warm freshwater and can cause a severe and often fatal brain infection known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Health officials are urging the public to take precautions when swimming in warm freshwater bodies, such as using nose clips and avoiding stirring up sediment.
