Meta has declined to sign the European Union's voluntary AI code of practice, citing legal uncertainties and concerns that the code exceeds the scope of the upcoming AI Act. Joel Kaplan, Meta's global affairs chief, stated that the company believes Europe is taking the wrong approach to AI regulation. The EU's code, published on July 10th, is intended to guide companies in complying with the AI Act's rules for general-purpose AI before the law's full implementation. While the code is not legally binding, the EU aims for it to ensure responsible AI development.
