Meta has reportedly acquired Play AI, a California-based startup specializing in AI voice cloning technology. According to Bloomberg, the entire PlayAI team will join Meta, working under Johan Schalkwyk, a former Google speech AI research lead. Meta indicated in an internal memo that PlayAI's capabilities align well with its existing AI initiatives, including Meta AI, AI Characters, and its wearables program. The acquisition signals Meta's continued investment in and expansion of its AI capabilities, particularly in the realm of voice technology.
