The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is auctioning off 52 oil and gas blocks, potentially endangering gorilla habitats and pristine forests. The licensing round covers 124 million hectares, including areas considered ecologically sensitive and vital for carbon sequestration. Experts warn that drilling in these regions, home to endangered gorillas and bonobos, would be detrimental and affect an estimated 39 million people. The move could undermine conservation efforts and exacerbate climate change, as the area contains significant carbon reserves.
