AOL is officially pulling the plug on its dial-up internet service on September 30, 2025. The announcement, posted on the company's website, signals the end of an era for the iconic service that defined early internet access for many after its launch in 1991. According to a statement from Yahoo, AOL's parent company, the decision comes as part of a routine evaluation of its products and services. The discontinuation will also include the AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser, both designed for older operating systems and dial-up connections. While many may be surprised the service was still active, a 2019 US census estimated that around 265,000 people in the United States still used dial-up.
