An Arizona woman has been sentenced to 8.5 years in prison for operating a "laptop farm" that enabled North Korean workers to fraudulently obtain IT jobs at 309 U.S. companies. The scheme allowed North Korean nationals to bypass sanctions and generate revenue for the regime by posing as U.S.-based remote workers. The woman facilitated the creation of fake online profiles and identities, providing the necessary infrastructure for the North Korean workers to secure employment and funnel income back to North Korea.
