A satellite has successfully used onboard AI to autonomously make decisions about image capture in space. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) tested the 'Dynamic Targeting' technology, developed by Open Cosmos (UK) and Ubotica (Ireland), on a briefcase-sized satellite. The AI analyzed a preview image within 90 seconds to determine if capturing a scientific image was worthwhile, all without human intervention. The satellite scanned 500km ahead of its orbit, and the AI decided whether to proceed. This marks a significant step towards more efficient and responsive space exploration.
